  1. refugees 1 - A black ink and black and gray color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears on the dust jacket of the book, "Refugees From An Imaginary Country," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley-Owlswick in 1999.

In this real world there really are people who are, "Refugees from an imaginary country," people who believe in the utter nonsense perpetrated by psychic frauds and phoney mystics who speak with the dead. And sadly, these refugees will not accept proof that what they believe in is a scam . . .

A long time ago, in NY, two little girls, the Fox sisters, were able to communicate with the spirit world; just ask the spirit any question and it answered, one rap for "no," three raps for "yes". Several psychic-fraud detectives checked them out and could not discover how this "miracle" was accomplished, the rapping sounds seem to come from nowhere. The girls said they came from the spirit of the dead . . .

And so the two little girls from NY became celebrities, made a lot of money traveling all over the country and Europe, giving seances to "believers," who had a need to "contact" their dearly departed.

They continued providing these lucrative "messages from the dead" for 40 years until their older sister, who managed the tours, had an attack of guilt and signed a confession; The girls had an uncanny knack of cracking their toes, like the cracking of knuckles, without showing any movement, a soft rapping sound whose point of origin was hard to determine . . .

And yet, many of the "believers" refused to accept the confession, claiming it was coerced by the authorities. They refused to believe that the sacred messages they had received from their dearly departed came from the girls, cracking their toes.
